Max: C is for Carlson

I just finished reading The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates: The Terror of the Southlands which is book 2 in the series, after The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates:Magic Marks the Spot.

In this book, Pirate Hilary Westfield starts an adventure in a most unusual way.  She starts it on the VNHLP President's pirate ship.  After receiving a warning for unpiratical behavior, she talks with Captain Blacktooth about adventures and quests.  But just the day after that, she got a note that sends her to Pemberton to see Miss Pimm, the Enchantress of the Northlands.  But when Miss Pimm has vanished, Hilary and her friends Claire (a finishing-school girl), Charlie (also known as Pirate Dove), Miss Greyson (a former governess, floating bookshop proprietor) and assorted other pirates seek to find her.  They are thwarted at every turn by The Mutineers, and the Queen's Inspectors (who bumble into Hilary's way), and Captain Blacktooth.  At Philomena's debut, at Tilbury Park, the Mutineers are discovered, pirates enter and there is a GRAND fighting scene.  And just when the pirates have almost won, Captain Blacktooth expels Hilary from the Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates...

I would recommend this series to people who like shocking twists, pirate stories, and silly magic.  I didn't like that there were no pictures (there weren't any in the first book, either).

  1. I also read this series. While it's clearly aimed at 8-10 year olds--plot heavy, silly characters--it's an enjoyable romp and I like to read things with my kids.
